Academic Intervention
Academic intervention helps students get back on track and succeed. Through personalized plans, guidance from advisors and faculty, and access to key resources, students learn strategies to improve performance, build confidence, and stay on course toward their academic and career goals.
Probation Requirements
As a student on academic probation, you must raise your cumulative GPA to at least 2.0 and pass more than half of your classes by the end of this semester, or you could be dismissed from Buffalo State.
As a condition of your continued enrollment at Buffalo State, it is mandatory to meet with the Academic Intervention Program adviser or your Associate Dean before the first week of the new semester and attend regularly scheduled meetings (which occur approximately every three to four weeks).
To prepare for this meeting, you should be familiar with the Program Requirements during your probationary period. We also ask that you complete the Student Self-Assessment form and return it to us before your first appointment.
At our initial meeting, we will create an individualized semester plan (including a review of your upcoming semester’s schedule) based on your assessment responses and complete a contract confirming your commitment to succeed at Buffalo State. Failure to do so will be considered negatively if your case is reviewed for dismissal with the college at any point in the future.
All students should understand that their probationary status does affect their financial aid eligibility, ability to declare a degree program, and continuation at the university.
Planning
- Assess your interests and values. Explore potential majors and career possibilities. The Career and Professional Education Center can help.
- Set goals for yourself. Start by setting long-term goals and then setting short-term goals to achieve your long-term ones.
- Project this semester's GPA and determine what efforts will be required to obtain those grades. Your academic adviser can assist.
- Develop a long-term academic plan, one that may include summer school to replace the loss of credits due to failed courses.
- Create a semester schedule. Assess and plan your work load--including classes, family commitments, work, and extra-curriculars--each week.
Meet with your intervention adviser early, prior to the end of drop/add week.
